Pushing it Further

How can I push these water scenes, these landscape scenes even further? Heightened color choices, more patterns, changes in composition, expressive mark making, abstracting a scene more...
These are some things that I'm constantly thinking about while painting: "how to simplify, but identify", "what colors can I put next to each other to make the other pop and sing more, even if it's not a color there in real time", "are all of the colors and their temperatures speaking to each other throughout the painting-is it working as a whole?", and "does this look fresh like it just fell off the brush or does it look overworked?"...
I've found some artists who paint a similar landscape up here along the St. Lawrence River/Canadian waters region (or other waterscapes) and I love the direction they've gone in to stylize the scenes up here.
