An Ode to Jane Freilicher

A professor of mine told me to look at Jane Freilicher and I was so intrigued by her still lifes. She subtly abstracted these inside/outside scenes - beautiful and bountiful bouquets in the foreground and an outdoor scene we see through a window: a cityscape, seascape, landscape...

I love this back and forth we get of looking at the main subject matter in the foreground and then looking through the window at another important subject matter, and then bouncing back to the bouquet and other still life objects. Formal terms for that are the "screen effect" (getting to look through something), and "projector" (a far reference object that keeps the eye from moving back in space and therefore bounces us back to the original foreground subject matter)

She was good friends with Fairfield Porter whose work I love. He met her in her mid 20s and loved her work and her use of color. I can see in her work how she was influenced by his art.
